Women's Rights

Today 8th of March 2011 marks 100th anniversary of International Women's Day. In the US, President Obama declared that March 2011 to be "Women History Month" to celebrate the achievement of women in economy, social and political. International Women Day was to remember for the movement to fight for equal rights.

Islam has given the rights to women more than 1400 years ago. This is clearly seen in the revelation of the words of Allah:

"O You who believe! You are forbidden to inherit women against their will, and you should not treat them with harshness, that you may take away part of the Mahr (bridal-money given by the husband to his wife at time of marriage) you have given them, unless they commit open illegal sexual intercourse. And live with them honorably. If you dislike them, it may be that you dislike a thing and Allah brings through it a great deal of good." (An-Nisa 4:19)

The rights given to women doesn't mean the sameness. Women play their roles based on who they are versus man who have the roles to play. Life is complete when there is complementary roles. The world will meaningless if man and women doing the samething, same way.

Our beloved Messenger of Allah SAW said:

"Assuredly, women are the twin halves of men." (Sahih reported by Abu-Dawud (RA)

Islam considers women has the same right as man. Allah mentioned that women was created from parts of Adam AS so thta they can be partner.

"O mankind! Be dutiful to your Lord, Who created you from a single person (Adam), and from him (Adam) He created his wife (Eve), and from them both He created many men and women and fear Allah through Whom you demand your mutual (rights), and (do not cut the relations of) the wombs (kinship). Surely, Allah is Ever and All-Watcher over you." (Al-Nisa 4:1)

It is Islam that recognized the rights of women some 1400 and this recognition continues.
