I was at Univeristi Teknologi Petronas last Friday to be one of the panels in the InternShare Forum: Internship Adapt for Future Success. Below are some of the questions posted to me during the forum.
Q: Preparation. What kind of preparations needed by the students prior to attending internship?
A: Well, if we remember when Rasulullah SAW wanted to hijrah, way back few months, he had instructed Saidina Abu Bakr RA to start preparing the route, choose the best camel, feed it with the best food and prepare for the journey. Likewise, in the internship, you need to prepare. Know your company, know yourself and know the position that you will be doing. You need to negotiate with the company for the job that you inspire to do.
Q: What kind of person that the company is looking at hiring them?
A: Hmmm... if you have a chance to do some research, you will find the companies are looking for individuals who are team player, full of energy, take intiative, motivated, independent etc. You can find all these from the job adverstisment in the STAR Newspaper on Saturday. My advise, few months prior to leaving the university, start do the research on the type of soft skills that you need to have.
Q: Challenges: How to overcome the challenges during internship?
A: There is no straight road to success. The finest statute which commands the highest price received the most knocks. It is the same for the nice painting. It needs to receive the most brush in order to have a nice ans smooth painting. Thus, you need to expect some challenges that will come in various forms. What you need to do is to continue focus to be on the right track. You cannot sway just because of the distractions that you will have during internship.
Q: What is the right job for us? How do we sure that we will like the job?
A: There is no assurance that you will like the job. In life, it will be perfect of we do what we love and get a lot of money just like Ronaldo in Real Madrid Footbal team or Lionel Messi with Barcelona Team. But how many of us can be Ronaldo and Messi? Alternatively, we need to love what we do. How many of us dream of having Angelina Jolie as a life parner but since we are not getting her as a life partner, we still need to love the partner that we have.
Those are some of the questions that I received. In wrapping-up my views, I had asked the students to plan for their success. If they fail to plan, the will plan to fail. They need to put a story board on what they want to see themselves at the end of intership period and start working on it. They need to take the advantage that being an intern, they are not expected to be a perfect person. They are in ZOFAN (Zone of Free and Neutral) area. Make some errors and learn from it.
